Choosing the right shade % and GSM for Gulf greenhouses

15 October 2026 · Narayana Global Exports

Shade net is bought on two numbers that are often confused: shade percentage and GSM. Getting both right is the difference between a cooler, productive structure and a net that tears early or blocks too much light.

Shade % is about light, GSM is about the net itself

Shade percentage describes how much sunlight the net blocks. GSM (grams per square metre) describes the weight of the fabric, which is linked to how much material is in the net and to how it handles wind and sun over time. Two nets can both say 75% shade and still have very different GSM, so always state both when you ask for a quotation.

Start from the crop and the structure

  • Seedlings, nurseries and leafy crops usually want more shade than fruiting crops.
  • Fruiting vegetables and flowers often do better with a lighter shade so that yield is not reduced.
  • Car parks, sports courts and people-facing areas are normally specified on comfort and privacy, and often use higher shade % and heavier GSM.

Your agronomist or greenhouse designer should confirm the exact percentage for your crop and site. We make the net to the figure they give you.

Do not forget colour and edge finish

Colour changes how the net looks and how it behaves under light. Edge finish and eyelets matter for how the net is fixed to the frame. Tell us the structure you are covering and we can advise on the edge and fixing details.

What to send us

For a quick, complete quotation, send: shade %, GSM, colour, width, length, quantity, destination port and the Incoterm you compare on. Our standard green net has an MOQ of 1 MT and a lead time of 7–10 days. Other colours have an MOQ of 5 MT, and custom specifications take 15–20 days.
